Back to School Styles for Natural Hair

It's that time of year again!! We wanted to share a few style options for your little naturals who are head back to class!

I'm showing 3 different ways to wear the same style.

Top Style:
I braided her hair in a mohawk fashion and created a center braid that starts at the base and leads to the top. I did not continue to braid at the very top. Instead, I created a cute pompadour type of bun and added a fab bow courtesy of the very talented Tyree of Miss. Teeny Fab Couture. She also created the matching Barbie shirt to match! If you haven't checked out her page, you are definitely missing out!!

Middle Style:
For this style, I kept the center braid, but I changed it up a little bit. I created three separate center braids that all lead to the top. I then wrapped the ends of her braids around each other and pinned them into place.

Bottom Style:
For this style, the center braid is made by incorporating the bottom and middle section, but not the top. I made a ponytail for the top section and allowed it to flow freely. I wrapped the end of her braid around the ponytail holder and pinned it into place.

There you have it! Three different style options from one style! Do you have any back to school styles to share? We would love to see them!!!

Back to School with Style

I wasn't sure which style I would do for our Back to School Style. I decided to do a variation of a previous style that I did earlier in the year. One major difference in the two styles is the amout of time it took to finish. I completed the previous style over the course of 3 days. I completed the new style in about 3 - 4 hours.

I started with clean, moisturized, and detangled hair. Her hair was cowashed using Herbal Essence Hello Hydration (old ingredients) with joboa oil added for extra slip. I decided to try the Oyin Handmade products on her hair once again. This time I used the Hair Dew Lightweight Quenching Lotion and the Burnt Sugar Pomade while banding her hair. I banded her hair in three sections (top, middle, and back) for a total of about 8 banded ponytails.

I cornrowed the bottom sections and added small box braids to the middle section using my own mixture of unrefined shea butter, coconut oil, vitamin E oil and castor oil.

Once the cornrows and box braids were complete in those sections, I added two cornrows on the top. I made two even sections on top with a part going down the middle of her head. I made the two cornrows (one on each side) by making a part from the top, center/front area down past her ear. I also added two additonal cornrows in the top/front area that can be seen in the pictures below.

We took a break from styling and decided to go to the store. Since her hair was not completely finished, I decided to add ponytails in the front. The ponytails were secured with ouchless bands.

I added small box braids in the front later that same day.

I wanted her braids to be curly for school so I rolled them using satin covered sponge rollers and Bee Mine Bee Hold Curly Butter. Her hair was covered with her satin sleep cap for bedtime.

The Results!!!!!

She has had this style for 5 days now and it still looks great!! A variation that could be made is to gather the box braids in the front into one ponytail. Another variation that could be made is to allow the box braids in the back to hang loosely.

Do you have a Back to School Style in mind? I would love to see them!! As always, if you would like to see more styles, please be sure to "Like" our Facebook fan page!!
