A Natural Hair "Hair" Bow - Minnie Mouse Style

How cute is this?! After I purchased Anisa's Minnie Mouse outfit recently, a friend suggested that I do a hair bow to go along with it. I loved the idea! I knew how to create the bow but I wasn't sure about the actual style that I wanted to produce. After thinking about it for a little while, here is the result!

Creating the Style
I began with clean, moisturized hair that had been banded for two days. I did not use any heat to create this style. I parted her hair from ear to ear, leaving a section of free hair in the front. Next, I created the cornrows that you see in the following picture.

I gathered the cornrows in the back into a small section in order to work on the front. I created 5 angled cornrows towards the center of her head and one more on the side that hangs down near her ear.

The Bow
Once the braiding was complete, I gathered her hair into one ponytail on the top of her head. Next, I separated it into two sections. I pulled a little bit of hair from one section and pinned it to the side. This small section would later serve as the center of the hair bow. I grabbed one of the larger sections, looped it around towards the back of her head and pinned it into place. I repeated this step with the other large section of the ponytail. I removed the pin from the smaller section and wrapped it around the center of the bow and pinned it into place as well. There are tons of tutorials on YouTube if you would like to see step by step instructions.

Another Option
If you aren't sure about trying the bow or if you would just like a different look, here is another option. For this look, I opted to make a simple bun instead of the bow. Her hair was still in the single ponytail on top when I created 3 two-strand twist ponytails. I looped each ponytail around and pinned it into place. You can make the bun as big or as small as you wish.

A Natural Updo: Rolled and Pinned

We're back with yet another natural updo! I created this style with a mixture of cornrows and two-strand twists.

 The Style

The Dashiki

This beautiful dashiki was made by Charmaine of Tambo Collection. Charmaine was very helpful and prompt in answering all of my questions about our order. Our items arrived on time and in excellent condition.

The following description is found on her Etsy page:

Welcome to our world of African fabrics by the yard, and unique handmade clothing. "Tambo Collection" is North America's largest supplier for Kente and wax print fabrics. We also sell fat quarters for small projects. We ship fast, and if our item is not in stock we will notify you by email immediately. See our selection of our handmade premade head wraps and crowns. **We also have a selection of hard to find African ribbon and trimmings**

The dashiki can be worn as a dress or as a top. We also had the option of wearing it with or without the sash. Anisa absolutely loves her dashiki and as you can tell from the pictures, it fits her perfectly! If you are interested in purchasing one, the direct link will be provided below.

Mtoto Nubienne Earcuffs for Little Girls

Did you notice the gorgeous little jewels gracing Anisa's ears? They are Mtoto Nubienne Earcuffs that were handmade by Ayida Honor. I first became acquainted with her special gift of jewelry design on her Etsy page, Native Style Beadery. She has since launched her own page, which can be found here

Upon one look at her handmade creations it is obvious that these items were made with love. Although the earcuffs that Anisa has were made for little girls, they are very durable.

Be sure to check out her page, www.ayidahonor.com, and fall in love with her gift of intricate beadweaving techniques.

We would love to hear from you! Be sure to leave comment below!

An All Natural Updo: Inspired by...

It should be obvious bu now that I LOVE updos!! Our latest style was inspired by Keianna KeeKee All Natural of Chi Chi Sophistication Natural Hair Care Studio. She recently posted pics of her style on her Facebook page and I knew it was something that I wanted to try. As usual, if I copy a style I always try to put my own little spin on things. Check out the rest of the pics and let us know what you think by leaving a comment!

Prepping for the Style
I began by working with clean, moisturized hair that was stretched using the banding method. I braided Anisa's hair just as I would if I wanted to make a simple mohawk. I opted to twist the remainder of each cornrow instead of continuing with a braid.

The Updo
I gathered all of her twists and began rolling them together as if I wanted to make a french roll. Once I reached the front of her head, I twirled the remaining portion of twists in a rosette fashion and pinned her hair into place.  I did not use any rubberbands for this style.

Changing it Up
A few days later, I decided to change it up a little bit. Instead of twisting her hair up together, I decided to twist each side of her mohawk separately. Each side was rolled in the same fashion as before and pinned into place.

Twisting each section separately also changed the front of her hair.

Maintaining the Style
I've been lightly spraying her hair with a water and EVOO mixture at night prior to bedtime. I also protect her hair by using a satin bonnet.

Easter Updo for Natural Hair

Happy Easter!

Are you ready for Easter? We are!! Anisa will be sporting this gorgeous updo along with her oh-so-cute dress!! Here's how I achieved this look:

Prep:
I detangled and washed Anisa's hair the night before I did this style. Once her hair was washed, I detangled her hair once again with my fingers and coconut oil  Her hair was also blow dried. Next, I loosely banded her hair for bed and tried to come up with a style for the next day.

Styling:
I knew that I wanted to do an updo but I didn't want to do a style that I've done before. It has also been awhile since I've braided her hair so I also wanted to incorporate cornrows in her new style.

To begin, I removed all of the bands and finger combed all of her hair to one side. Next, I began making curved parts from the nape of her neck to the top of her head to make the cornrows.  I continued cornrowing her hair until the section I was working with was complete. As you can see in the pictures below, I did not cornrow her entire head.

I ended up with two sections, one with cornrows and one without. I made 3 two-strand twists in the cornrowed section and 2 two-strand twists in the loose section.

Next, I began rolling the twists around my fingers to form large rosettes. The rosettes were then pinned into place.

Easter Style:
Of course Anisa has a gorgeous dress to go with her gorgeous new style! I found this Bonnie Jean watercolor floral dress online and I had to have it! As you can see, she loves it as well!
