April Hair Carnival: Copycat Style

It's Hair Carnival time!! This time around I was paired with the talented Michelle and Des of Girly and Curly. Here's a little bit about Michelle in case you've never visited her page:

I am a mother of three beautiful multi-racial children. My sons are teenagers well on their way to being grown ups and a Girly daughter who loves every second of being a self proclaimed fashionista. This blog will talk about various products that make our life easier and more enjoyable, girly stuff (of course), beauty products, and last but certainly not least naturally curly hair and the care you put into it.

For this carnival,  I chose to recreate a style that is posted on the Girly and Curly Facebook fan page. Be sure to stop by and "Like" her page and visit her Style Gallery for more amazing styles!!

Here is the original style that Michelle created for Des:

I copied this style as closely as I could, while adding my own special touches.

Products Used for Styling:
Comb for parting
Water bottle

I started with clean, detangled, moisturized and stretched hair. Next, I created four ponytails that were each placed in the center. I then created 3 - 5 two-strand twists for each ponytail and wrapped them around into a bun. The buns were secured with hair pins. For the bangs, I looped the twists around in a clockwise motion and instead of using hair pins, I placed a black ouchless hair band around the top to secure it. The remainder of her hair that was not wrapped was unraveled to make curly bangs. I added a matching flower to complete the look.

We're Back with a Twist and Updates

Anisa wore her twists for a few days before I decided to change up her style a bit. I gathered her twists and separated them into 3 sections. Next, I secured each section with an ouchless band and added a curly bow. I've been moisturizing her hair with the same Oyin Handmade products that I've mentioned in previous posts: Hair Dew and Burnt Sugar Pomade.

After wearing this style for 2 days, I changed the style again. This time I decided to try a twistout and it was absolutely beautiful!!!! She wore her twists for 4 days before the twistout. I think that this, along with the moisturizers, really helped to improve our overall results.

She ended up wearing her hair out for 2 more days. I continued to use the moisturizers and I covered her hair using the same satin bonnet mentioned in this post. Here are the results:

So there you have it! One week, three styles... How do you make the most out of your styles?

We're Back with a Twist

We're fianlly back! After dealing with our air issues and going  back and forth with the company that was supposed to fix it, we finally have air!! Yay!! I've been wanting to do a twisted style on Anisa but I was unable to do much of anything hair related due to the heat. After she wore her wash and go, I cowashed her hair using Herbal Essence Hello Hydration (old ingredients) with a little bit of jojoba oil mixed in. She has been having scalp issues due to her eczema so I've been trying to incorporate more oils into our routine for added moisture. After cowashing, her hair was left banded for two days.

Once the bands were removed I didn't really have a style in mind. I just knew that I had to do something! I kept her hair parted in the four sections that were used for banding. Using Oyin Handmade Hair Dew and Burnt Sugar Pomade, I made a unique cornrows and twists style.

I started by making two small cornrows in the front of each of the 4 sections. The sections closest to her ears were cornrowed while the two sections on top were flat twisted. I gathered all of the 4 sections together and secured them with one ouchless band and added two curly bows.

She wore this style to school and it did not last! The twists were very frizzy when I picked her up but there was a good reason for this. They played basketball at recess and from the looks of things, she had a GOOD time! I was left with two options, well really three. (1) I could let her wear the style one more day, (2) I could let her wear a twist/braid out or (3) I could restyle it. I went with option 3.

Later that night I took down her braids and twists and decided to do flat twists all over. I am really new to flat twists. I've only flat twisted her hair one other time other than the style posted above. The first time was after a wash as an alternative to banding. Here is a picture:

And here is a picture of her hair once the cornrows/twists were removed prior to her new twists:

I began by parting her hair at the nape of her neck and secured the rest of her hair with an ouchless band. I once again used Oyin Handmade Hair Dew and Burnt Sugar Pomade while doing this style. I did not pay much attention to the time while doing this style but it did not take long at all. I took the following pic with my phone as soon as I was done.

And here are the full results:

Bedtime
For bedtime, I will use one of her satin bonnets to protect her twists. This particular bonnet was purchased at Walmart but unfortunately I don't remember the price. I love that is has a big pouch or pocket that allows her hair to hang while still being protected. I positioned the bonnet so that the pouch was on the side, just as her twists.
